This Is No Mountain [Collab with Cailen]

By Kedbreak136 on May 15, 2022 2:22 am

This week's track was a collab with Cailen (https://weeklybeats.com/cailen). It did take longer than a week because I am a pretty bad collaborator when it is about reverting promptly, but the experience was fun and I like the result.

We started from trying to get an image as a seed for the concept. Here is the image we ended up with:

(Image from Art Station, by Daniele Gray)

This mix of ancient mechs sleeping in a medieval world were also reminiscent of the Castle in the Sky movie by Ghibli, or also Nausicaa, which both deal with ancient civilizations with war robots which ended up destroying themselves.

Cailen came up with very cool piano melodies and some beats that are definitely not something i'd come up with (as i know only two time signatures - 4/4 and 6/8). There is some Buckethead like robotic riff in there also, that was just so appropriate. We exchanged a few rounds of additional melody ideas and instruments before Cailen did the bone structure of the song.
I iterated on it based on the following story - an indigenous tribe celebrates a festival with drums, singing, and flutes but the beat happens to awake what seemed to be a mountain. The robotic heart starts beating, and it starts to raise, break the surrounding rocks, and finally get free. And it goes on doing what good old human technology at its pinnacle does - shoot everybody in sight with pew pew lasers before overheating its ancient core and self-destroying in a bright orange fireball.
Thanks Cailen for the collaboration, sorry for always being late! I enjoyed it, let's do it again in the future! smile

Cool collaboration.  I can definitely hear some parts that remind me of you such as the vocal sounds and the lasers and some that sound like a different vibe.  I like how you can hear a story being told over the course of the track even without the initial image, which is also cool by the way.  Love the furious energy when the laser battle really gets going.

haha. love the yelling!

So epic. I loved having the story to read as I listened to the track. It grounded everything in the world you were creating and just gave all the melodical madness a strong cohesion. Great work the both of you.

jeesus this is amazin. Hyper bastards

Great stuff, the story and image add so much to this as you listen, lots of ideas and sounds to process, brilliant use of all the sound effects.

Nice one. Damn the part at 2m36 is intense (As it should be).

I listened before I read and everything fell into place. Would make an interesting animated short. Nice.

This track is absolutely bananas and I love it. Thanks to the both of you and congratulations. It's a mood-shifting, shape-shifting, laser-having, pensive, active, scary, beautiful, violent, clusterfuck of a track WHERE EVERYTHING MAKES WAY MORE SENSE THAN IT SHOULD HOW THE FFFF YOU DID THIS. heart

I want to ensure there are no misunderstandings: my above comment is meant to communicate this is remarkable and it impressed me because this works really well. I hope that calling your work a clusterfuck in the process didn't distract from that main point.

This goes really wild at the end!!!!!! The pictures you present are miscellaneous and are cinematic indeed. The sound of this is well executed and match perfect with the picture you gave us above. well done you two.

Awesome story telling in the music! Love that foreboding bass that comes in at 1:55. Really cool cinematic sound design elements as well.  You can hear the giant mech coming out of the mountain and all holy hell breaks loose! Elevating this to synth-rock opera!

Superb!! Love the storytelling, and the movements of the song’s imagery.  Very inspiring!

Great story, really sets the stage for the song.  Love the modulation of the notes in this one.  Great track

Thank you for listening! It was definitely interesting to do a collab and each bringing our own different way of approaching making a track.

It's like a vocal exclamation mark!

Thank you! It may sound silly but the sound of rocks falling is one of the parts i am very happy in this track - it did take some effort to make it work. smile

Thank you very much! Lots of hyperactive samples in this track, indeed.

I welcome the chaos, and if you looked at what this looks like in a DAW, you'd realize how approrpiate "clusterfuck" is to describe it. smile

Haha thank you! The ending of this track is pretty hectic indeed!

Love the frenetic feel of the guitar riffs and thick percussion.   With some sweet fx ear candy! This felt like an awesome cinematic intro to a new but old school RPG game smile  Well done!

Love the Buckethead type section with the mental glitch and then a lazer fight later!  Haha. Definitely sounds like a fun collab.

Every percussion choice made here is beautiful

Wow this was a kick ass collab. Goes nucking futs there at the end. Lazer beams, explosions, screaming, with this kind of synth-prog thing going on among it all.

Damn. I did not know what I was in for. Nobody told me I needed spare pants.

The super musical fight scene was mind-blowing. Killed it, guys!

Wow, really great execution of the concept and excellent musical story telling. Sounds like audio from a trailer for something I need to buy immediately.

Dang!! Yes. Epic song, and epic image to go along.
